The Sustainable Consumption Institute would like to invite you to attend an
SCI Public Lecture entitled
Social Capital and Determinants of Personal Consumption
by Professor Sir Partha Dasgupta
on Thursday March 8th 2012
4.30 – 6.00 pm
Whitworth Hall, The University of Manchester, Oxford Road
Manchester M13 9PL
World-leading economist Sir Partha Dasgupta, Professorial Research Fellow at the Sustainable Consumption Institute, will explain the latest thinking about what drives us to consume goods and services. He will be making a case for students of consumption and policy makers to recognise that as we humans are social animals, each of us looks over our shoulders to see what others are consuming when we come to choose our own consumption - a kind of "neighbourhood effect". The aggregate of all such neighbourhood effects can hugely influence both the quantity and composition of societal consumption.
Professor Dasgupta won the Zayed Prize for Scientific and Technological achievements in the environment in 2011, the world’s most valuable environmental award. Named by the prize committee as one of the most outstanding environmental economists of his generation, Professor Dasgupta made the link between sustainability and economics long before such work was fashionable.

Sustainable Consumptition Institute
The SCI looks at how to make household consumption behaviour more sustainable, how to drive environmental innovation processes through the supply chain, and how to model climate change scenarios with a focus on food and transport. For more information please visit ttp://www.sci.manchester.ac.uk
In 2009, The Sunday Times noted that the establishment of the Sustainable Consumption Institute embodies "the university's spirit of academic endeavour... seeking to place Manchester at the heart of the global debate over climate change, carbon emissions and sustainable consumer behaviour…"
